Marbled hatchetfish breeding. Marbled hatchetfish are egg layers. In the aquarium breeding can be somewhat difficult but they can be encouraged to spawn under the right conditions. They are egg layers but some species like the common hatchetfish are very difficult to breed in the home aquarium. 10 gallon or larger.
The easiest ones to breed in captivity are marbled hatchet fish though they are among the more delicate strains in general. While other hatchetfish marbled hatchetfish have been bred in the home aquarium at this time there are no reliable accounts of black winged hatchet fish being bred. There is no difference between the colouration of male and female hatchet fish but females especially when gravid with eggs are noticeably more rounded. They are egglayers and the adult fish must be removed after dropping the eggs.
There are very few physical differences between male and female so sexing these fish is difficult. They are not bred on a commercial basis but they have been bred in captivity. Hatchet fish can be difficult to breed in the home aquarium. Feed the fry brine shrimp.
